Commercial fishing licenses

Commercial fisheries in the Torres Strait Protected Zone are managed by the Torres Strait Protected Zone Joint Authority (PZJA). Commercial licensing matters are handled on behalf of the PZJA by the Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries (QPI&F).

To fish commercially in the Torres Strait, you will require one or more licences. Details regarding the types of licences, your eligibility to obtain such licences, and application forms can be found on the Torres Strait Licensing pages of the QPI&F website.

Where do you go for more information?

Contact the QPI&F Call Centre on 13 25 23. The call centre staff will direct your inquiry to the appropriate licensing officer.

Scientific permits

Scientific permits to conduct research in the Torres Strait Protected Zone are handled on behalf of the PZJA by the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA). This arrangement avoids a possible conflict of interest when State Government Departments seek scientific permits. Scientific permits are issued to allow for scientific research by way of fishing in an area of Australian jurisdiction.
