Total Allowable Catch for Prickly redfish reduced to 15 tonnes
Total Allowable Catch for Prickly redfish reduced to 15 tonnes The annual Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for Prickly redfish, a target species in the Torres Strait Beche-de-mer Fishery, has been reduced from 20 to 15 tonnes. In 2017, the Protected Zone Joint Authority (PZJA) Hand Collectables Working Group recommended a reduction in the TAC for Prickly redfish due to sustainability concerns coming from previous overfishing and inadequate catch reporting.
The Australian Fisheries Management Authority, on behalf of the PZJA, has notified Beche-de-mer licence holders of the reduced TAC, which will apply as a licence condition from 1 January 2018.
