Torres Strait Finfish Fishery: information for the 2025–26 season
The Protected Zone Joint Authority (PZJA) has set the total allowable commercial catch (TACC) for Spanish mackerel and coral trout in the Torres Strait Finfish Fishery's 2025–26 fishing season, which commences on 1 July 2025.
At its out-of-session meeting on 25 February 2025, the PZJA agreed that:
- the Spanish mackerel TACC will be 77 tonnes
- the coral trout TACC will be 123 tonnes.
In making its decision, the PZJA considered advice from both the Finfish Fishery Resource Assessment Group and Finfish Fishery Working Group. Meeting records for these groups are available on the Torres Strait Finfish Groups page.
Access to the Torres Strait Finfish Fishery is reserved for Traditional Inhabitants (the TIB Sector) and fishers that lease sunset licences (the sunset sector) from the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA).
Sunset licences may be held by non-traditional inhabitants and allow for a certain amount of catch to be taken. Leasing arrangements for the sunset sector are currently under negotiation.
AFMA will publish the outcomes of these negotiations after the process has been completed.
