The annual pre-season survey of tropical rock lobster (kaiar) in the Torres Strait begins on 22 October. 

All fishers participating in the 2026 black teatfish season will be required to use vessel monitoring systems (VMS).

Several amendments to the Torres Strait Prawn Fishery Management Plan 2009 (TSPF Plan) have been drafted to bring it up to date with the current fishery management environment and remove old clauses that are no longer required.

The season for 2025–26 opens on Monday, 1 December, for free diving and lamp fishing only. 

It closes on 30 September 2026, or when available quota units have been caught. 

The PZJA has endorsed a new 5-year strategic research plan for the Torres Strait Scientific Advisory Committee (TSSAC).
